Europe is about to make vague fashion claims like 'green' and 'sustainable' much harder to use

Starting September 27, fashion brands making environmental claims in Europe will need evidence instead of marketing language.

New European consumer-protection rules are tightening what fashion companies can say about sustainability.

Claims such as “green,” “sustainable” or “planet-friendly” will increasingly require substantiation, while some claims based on carbon offsets face especially strict limits.

Why it matters

Fashion marketing has relied heavily on vague environmental language that can be difficult for consumers to verify. The new rules could force brands to replace broad claims with measurable information about materials, production and certification.

That may also reward companies that invested early in traceability and supply-chain data.

Scientists are using CT scans and spectral imaging to engineer better half-plant burgers

Food scientists are analyzing hybrid meat almost like medical imaging—looking inside patties to understand how plant proteins change texture.

Researchers used hyperspectral imaging and X-ray computed tomography to study beef patties blended with different plant proteins.

Faba bean and pea proteins tended to soften the patties, while rice protein increased hardness.

Why it matters

Hybrid meat aims for a middle ground between conventional meat and fully plant-based substitutes: less animal protein without asking consumers to abandon meat entirely.

The geeky part

Instead of relying only on tasting panels, researchers can now non-destructively map composition and internal structure to understand why a formulation feels different when eaten.
