Europe is about to make vague fashion claims like 'green' and 'sustainable' much harder to use

Starting September 27, fashion brands making environmental claims in Europe will need evidence instead of marketing language.

New European consumer-protection rules are tightening what fashion companies can say about sustainability.

Claims such as “green,” “sustainable” or “planet-friendly” will increasingly require substantiation, while some claims based on carbon offsets face especially strict limits.

Why it matters

Fashion marketing has relied heavily on vague environmental language that can be difficult for consumers to verify. The new rules could force brands to replace broad claims with measurable information about materials, production and certification.

That may also reward companies that invested early in traceability and supply-chain data.
