Three endangered wild-dog brothers trek 4,100 km across Africa

Their eight-month journey is the longest recorded single mammal trek in Africa and a real-world test of whether wildlife corridors still connect.

Three endangered African wild-dog brothers traveled more than 4,100 km (2,500 miles) across Zambia in about eight months, the longest recorded single journey by a mammal in Africa. Researchers tracked them from Kafue National Park to the Luangwa Valley as they crossed roads, farms and other human-dominated landscapes.

Why it matters

The dogs survived because pieces of habitat remain connected. Other tracked dogs died, probably in snares, showing how fragile those corridors are.

How much agreement is there?

Broad agreement. Researchers agree the journey demonstrates the value of landscape connectivity. Debate is mostly about the best mix of protected areas, corridors and community-based conservation.

Could someone help?

Support anti-snare programs, ranger teams and conservation groups that protect wildlife corridors rather than only fenced reserves.

Sea turtles nest on the U.S. West Coast for the first recorded time

Two olive ridley turtles unexpectedly laid eggs on Southern California beaches—something scientists had never documented anywhere on the U.S. West Coast.

Two olive ridley sea turtles nested on beaches near Seal Beach and Huntington Beach in Southern California. NOAA says these are the first recorded natural sea-turtle nests on the U.S. West Coast.

Why this is wild

Olive ridleys normally nest much farther south in places such as Mexico and Central America. Scientists confirmed the two sightings involved different turtles.

Then it got weirder

Because hurricane-driven waves threatened the nests, wildlife teams moved more than 200 eggs to the Aquarium of the Pacific to incubate them safely before any hatchlings are returned to their original beaches.

The Brewers set a franchise wins record with back-to-back shutouts

Milwaukee reached 98 wins—the most in franchise history—while tightening its grip on one of baseball’s best records.

The Milwaukee Brewers beat Baltimore 3-0 to complete a sweep and reach 98 regular-season wins, a new franchise record.

Why it mattered

Milwaukee had tied the previous franchise high of 97 the night before and then immediately broke it. The Brewers also remained in contention for the best record in the National League heading into the postseason.

One more thing

The record-setting win came through a pitching relay: starter Jacob Misiorowski plus six relievers combined for the shutout.
